I stood before the congregation nervous as a youth
I tapped my foot a count of four and stared up at the roof
I thought if I avoided eyes the words would flow with ease
But I had to strain and feel the burn of a thousand flaming trees
Your non-descript blank faces were gray behind the haze
Time stopped for a moment yet I still could feel your gaze
My voice rang like a bell so loud I was sure it pierced the sky
And when the song was done the cloud dissipated in the rye
I shrugged off any form of praise but hoped that you were phased
As I packed my twelve string guitar gently back into her case
And my effect was probably just imagination running wild
So I left that place behind me like I left behind a child
